I’ve chosen not to tell you about the lack of water in hot regions. I haven’t experienced this yet and maybe – if I’m a lucky one – I never will. I’m living in Germany – a country, part of the Western civilization, with a 24/7-access to clear water right from the tap. We’re talking about people using “not enough water”. The saving policy of many households and the depopulation of Eastern Germany has caused a simple problem: We’re recognizing now, that the past pipeline designs are oversized and now there is not enough water flowing through the tubes, leading to more sedimentary deposition etc. This causing an additional need in maintenance and thereby higher costs. What a funny challenge compared with women daily walking miles to get a jar full of water…

But that’s not the thing I want to talk about. I will tell you about a fascinating experiment I’ve seen in a TV broadcast. There was a family of five persons (father, mother, three children) and they just wanted to find out, how to live without instant water out of the tap. So they assigned an installer from their water provider to shut down their major tube. (You should have seen that guys face: “You really want me to close that valve?”).

After that the family started to fill all possible bins, pots and vessels with water from their well and tried to live one week without any shower, washing machine, toilet flush…

Even at the first day they found out, how often they normally use water: washing hands, cleaning dishes, cleaning food or just drinking from the tap. Without that everything became more complicated and time-eating.

After a couple of days they all looked really stressed, they had to buy all the drinking water because of a public authority prohibited them to use the well as drinking source.
Hygiene became a matter of economy too. Normally, the father took a shower each day after work, but now he couldn’t. Using the cold well water – once he tried it – hasn’t been a convenient alternative. The same thing to the girls when they wanted to wash their hair. And so they step by step moved away from typical hygiene standards by that time, still requested to look business-like at work. Not easy, as you can imagine…

To make it short: The family succeeded in living without water from the tap. But they all came to the conclusion, that modern life wasn’t possible that way. To much time and energy is spent in fetching and heating water and it’s mostly uncomfortable to do this. Time and energy, you could use otherwise. Civilization would look different, if we had not a modern water pipeline system. So what about the people who haven’t? Do they have a real chance to become “modern”? Or are they bound to the struggle of life?

If you want to experience the comfort of a water supplying system on your own, just call your local installer! One week should be enough.

Zusammenfassung: Eine Familie führt ein Experiment durch. Der Hauptwasserhahn wird abgedreht und damit versiegt das fließende Wasser aus der Wand. Schnell wird deutlich: Wir gebrauchen ständig Wasser. Kommt das kühle Nass nicht aus der Leitung, sondern aus dem Brunnen und muss mit viel Aufwand herbeigeschafft und erhitzt werden, wird das alltägliche Leben mühsam. Wasser sparen wird da zur absoluten Notwendigkeit.

Das ist vorbildliches Linkbuilding mittels Social Media! Damit nicht alle die gleichen Linktexte verwenden, werden gleich mehrere Verlinkungsmöglichkeiten vorgegeben. Ganz schön clever die Herrschaften! Vom „verschenken“ der Papierablagekörbe kann bei einem Warenpreis von 20 Euro kaum die Rede sein. Wenn man einen Fachmann an das Linkbuilding setzt, wird’s wesentlich teurer. Schlecht finde ich auch, dass es keine Mindeststandards für die „Ideen“ gibt. „Ich lasse beim Zähneputzen das Wasser nicht mehr laufen, sondern benutze einen Becher“ – was als Beitrag wohl funktionieren würde, ist nun wirklich nicht sonderlich innovativ. Aber vielleicht sollte man einfach nicht so kritisch sein und sich freuen, wenn die Leute überhaupt etwas in die Richtung tun.

Anlass der Aktion ist der Tag der Tropenwälder – an sich eine gute Sache. Das Ziel der „Aktionäre“ jedoch in erster Linie der Verkauf von PAKs. Ehrlich gesagt brauch ich so ein Teil nicht, auch wenn das Design ganz nett ist. Irgendwie bin ich hin- und hergerissen, ob ich da nun mitmachen soll. Einerseits ist es gut, was für die Umwelt zu tun, und das zu viel Papier verbraucht wird, ist sicher unstrittig, andererseits lasse ich mich ungern verschaukeln. Letztendlich könnte man das Ganze aber als win-win-Situation betrachten…

PS: Möbel aus Pappe gibt es schon eine ganze Weile. Eine gute Idee, wie ich finde…
